Atopic Dermatitis

A chronic, intensely itchy inflammatory skin disease, and part of a wider allergic picture.

What it is

More than dry, itchy skin

Atopic dermatitis, often called eczema, is a chronic inflammatory disease marked by intense itch, dryness, and a weakened skin barrier. It frequently begins in childhood but can start or persist in adulthood.

More than skin-deep. Atopic dermatitis is driven by immune inflammation and a leaky skin barrier, and it often travels with other allergic conditions as part of what is called the atopic march.

Signs and symptoms

What it can look like

  • Intense, often relentless itch
  • Red or discolored, inflamed patches
  • Common on the face, neck, and the folds of the elbows and knees
  • Dry, cracked, or thickened skin
  • Oozing, crusting, or frequent skin infections
  • Sleep disrupted by scratching

Associated conditions

Comorbidities to know

Atopic Dermatitis can travel with other conditions, which is why whole-person assessment matters, not just treating the skin.

  • Asthma. Part of the shared allergic, or atopic, picture
  • Allergic rhinitis. Hay fever and nasal allergy
  • Food allergy. More common, especially in children
  • Skin infections. Broken skin is prone to bacterial and viral infection
  • Sleep disturbance. Night-time itch that affects rest and daytime function
  • Mental health. Higher rates of anxiety and depression

The burden

Why it matters to patients

Unrelenting itch and lost sleep wear people down, affecting school, work, mood, and family life, and visible flares can affect confidence at any age.

Care has expanded

There is more help than ever

Care now goes well beyond moisturizers and topical anti-inflammatories. Newer targeted therapies address the specific immune signals behind the itch and inflammation, with treatment choices that require accurate diagnosis, severity assessment, and monitoring. Specialty guidance helps match therapy to severity and age.
